Kyoto and Osaka, Along the Way

What stayed with me from my first visit to Kyoto and Osaka was not a complete itinerary, but a collection of precise images: red maples outside Kinkaku-ji, rain on a stone-paved slope, wind rushing past on a roller coaster, and the awkwardness of checking the train map over and over again.

Kinkaku-ji

Kinkaku-ji exceeded my expectations more than anywhere else on the trip. Before I even entered, the row of red maples by the gate was already enough to stop me. The golden pavilion sat among layers of trees, with the phoenix on its roof sharply outlined by the light.

Ninenzaka and Kiyomizu-dera in the rain

The rain was heavy when I reached Ninenzaka. It gave the stone road and traditional buildings a different color. The slope felt steeper than it looked in photographs, especially after a full day of walking.

A shop along the way sold excellent matcha chocolate. I bought only two boxes and began regretting it as soon as I returned home.

Kiyomizu-dera waits farther up the hill. By the time I arrived it was already dark, too late for the hillside of autumn leaves I had imagined, but the temple in the rainy night had a quietness of its own.

Universal Studios Japan

Hollywood Dream was the most immediate joy of the day. Osaka Lover, the weightlessness, and the wind arriving all at once lasted longer—and became more addictive—than I expected.

Trains and Suica

On a first encounter with Japan’s rail system, the most confusing part is that one route may appear under an abbreviation, a full name, and the branding of several operators.

• Use Google Maps as the primary guide.
• When an abbreviation is unclear, check the full line name and terminal direction.
• Do not rely on color alone; different systems may reuse the same one.
• Suica on an iPhone is convenient and works by simply holding the phone near the gate.

Shopping

Many shops around Shinsaibashi close at about eight in the evening, so shopping is best planned earlier. Tax-free purchases require a passport, so do not leave it at the hotel. Restaurants usually stay open later, although queues can be long during busy seasons.

This is not a complete guide—only a few scenes and notes I hope to find again before the next journey.
